The menu makes choosing difficult. First World Problems. While at a lot of breakfast places, a lot of the time you can easily pick a stand out in the menu - something that grabs your attention easily - But here, each dish just had that something that made me want to choose one over the other, so to make life easier for myself, we asked the recommendation from the waitress! I ended up with the eggs and the fatty chose the apple turnover french toast without any hesitation! I also ordered my usual latte and also a juice to share; a blend of orange, peach and ginger - really refreshing combination, and you can actually taste the ginger which gives it a bit of a kick!

It was the simplicity of my meal that was appealing to me, a 'cleaner' version of an eggs benedict, less bread (which i prefer), eggs not being overwhelmed with hollandaise sauce (which i also prefer), roasted cherry tomatoes and plenty of bacon! the portions were just right for a breakfast, nothing too heavy or light, but having said that, this was shared... and i also had half the french toast, latte and a bit of the juice... while i enjoyed my dish, i think the star out of both of the breakfasts' was the apple turnover french toast. i don't think i've enjoyed french toast this much for a little while! Both pieces of toast is very thick cut, so it wasn't too dry or soggy, the mascarpone and maple syrup didn't drown it either and the caramelised pecans were awesome as an accompaniment (different from the usual seasonal berries, the huge dollops of mascarpone and pools of syrup which just overwhelms the bread and that's all you can usually taste.. i mean sometimes i don't mind that but most of the time it also means i don't finish it because all i can taste/feel like im eating is maple syrup, cream and berries) also, not to mention the apple puree that was soaked into the bread! this french toast was pretty perfect for me! thumbs up for this one!

^ I would definitely recommend the french toast here if you're like myself and love thick cut pieces of bread without it being overwhelmed with the sweeter component of sauces etc :) i have to also say, the rest of the menu Anouk offers sound pretty promising! although not too keen on the one with sardines...

The Little Larder | New Farm

 Around 930am the fatty, williepopper and myself ventured out to this place for breakfast...  this little cafe was already packed, people were waiting to be seated (luckily we  scored a table as soon as we got there) and the waitress entertaining our ears with her witty commands at people to not to be seated unless she says so. It's quiet refreshing compared to other places where in general it's just 'please', 'thank you's and your general niceties. Her's was just in your face! You can't help but laugh really.

Onwards to the food. the menu is quite simple on inspection and although i had mentally chosen the pesto scrambled eggs, we asked for a recommendation; the waiter, one of the fatty's friends recommended the pesto scrambled eggs (score! - what i had), the wagyu burger (the fatty's) and the baked beans.. williepopper ended up deviating from the recommended and chose the steak and eggs, while he enjoyed but was not outstanding on the menu. I was quite impressed with the eggs, firstly because you can actually taste the pesto, compared to pesto eggs i had in melbourne, while it appeared deliciously green and riddled with pesto - i could hardly taste anything! These pesto eggs were delicious however i was thinking i should of had ham instead of the salmon, the reason being, the salmon was quite salty and overpowering, so when eaten in combination with the eggs, the salmon dominated in terms of flavouring! this is my personal preference, but i'm not too big of a fan of really hard, crusty bread - so i would have preferred a softer kind of bread rather than the sourdough! (yes i'm pretty picky sometimes!) i tried some of the wagyu burger, and you can actually taste the wagyu! i'm pretty impressed considering that this is more a cafe/breakfasty place that they could dishout a decent chunk of wagyu - i was expecting something mediocre for the price i suppose. i mean compared to a burger joint (burger urge i think) their wagyu was pretty much just plain beef! so congrats to the little larder for pulling that one off. the onion rings were pretty good, had a nice crunch and not too oily, AND actually contained an onion and not just batter! there is also something about pickles and burgers, they just complete the burger for me! unfortunately i can't say too much about williepopper's breakfast, although his steak did look pretty good to me and we agreed that the eggs were a bit on the burnt side, but the fatty did point out they cooked it like that to add flavour (?).. but was not a stand out in his opinion!

Depending on what you're getting, these breakfasts' aren't overly massive if you're on the hunt for 'big breakfasts'. However the price you're paying the food and service is pretty good! if it gives you any idea, i would prefer to dine here rather than the gunshop cafe, in terms of food, pricing and service. the gunshop cafe while it retains the image of a 'hip-laidback-weekend-cafe' and is well known at westend, i do believe the name of the cafe (and location) is what sells the food (sorry to say this - in my previous review i did enjoy the ambience but food was ok, not too much of a standout - perhaps it was just what i ordered?) compared to the little larder, in a suburban street, decent price for the quality/taste of food  and more locally known, i would rather choose to come here for pal times and food; but like i said this is subjective to taste and what not.

first impressions - vintage, wooden tables, waiters with bow ties, bowls of sugar lamps, flowers,  jars of lollies,  suspended lightbulbs, feature lamps, and at the front of the cafe, a coffee cartel for takeaway orders - tucked away in the suburb of Hendra.  (a very melbourne-esque sorta cafe - reminds me of the hardware societe cafe in melbourne.)

In terms of breakfast the variety of breakfast type foods is limited compared to the types of drinks and coffees that are offered; but in having said that, i can offer no criticism to the breakfast trifle i ordered - who said breakfast can't be delicious and healthy at the same time! Kei and i ended up ordering 2 lattes' each, first set of lattes was just their general blends and the second being their single origin blends for the day - mine: Tanzania Songea Kusini Peaberry: caramalised balsamic, grapefruit, tangy acidity, juicy mouth feel - and kei's: Colombian Magdelena Teyuna: tobacco, honey, roasted peanut, pleasant supporting acidity. My blend was pretty interesting - could definitely tast the tangy grapefruit as they so describe it! definitely not your 'usual' sort of roast, but enjoyed it none-the-less. i love the fact that they give a little card describing what's in your coffee, and the taste to expect - so creative and cute! i didn't take a photo but you can sort of see in the photos above^

probably the perfect cafe for a light breakfast and pal times (not so much for someone who is looking for big breakfasts and such), and, not to mention for the avid coffee & tea lover, as the menu is quite extensive.

I've already reviewed this place, but seeing as Campos have monthly menus, a few things on the menu caught my eye, so a visit was a must. I ordered the chilli scrambled eggs and the fatty ordered the lamb.. How ridiculous is that to have lamb for breakfast? Even so, it was a good choice! We also had the mars bar pancakes to share - normally wouldn't order this much for breakfast, but today's sorta a special day :)

The scrambled eggs - the eggs was done perfectly however i couldn't taste much of the chilli? i was a little disappointed, but the fact that it was cooked well made up for it.. i'm not sure if it's campos signature style to over do things a bit in terms of toasting.. but the potato rosti that came as the side was overdone a bit too much, to the point where it's actually burnt.. we did tell the waiter and he was kind enough to bring out another serving of it for us since i didn't touch the burnt ones.. to my knowledge.. rosti isn't supposed to be overly toasted to the point where it looks burnt? (the previous campos breakfast i had, the bread was also on the burnt side...) i'm not too sure what the greens were, spinach and some herb thing (?) but it was really nice! 

Campos might be the only place to serve lamb for breakfast; i mean i'm sure it's more of a lunch thing but it's pretty awesome that you can order it anytime! i have to say, usually i'm not a huge fan of lamb, i prefer beef, chicken, seafood and pork.. but the sauce and the beans that was cooked with it tasted amazing! a pretty good savoury dish for breakfast i must say... especially since the weather is still pretty cool.

The best is usually saved to the last, we also ordered the pancakes; i think this might be the highlight of the breakfast, i mean, look at how massive it is (THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID hurhur), but the pancakes were perfectly cooked - texture was fluffy, not too sweet either  - the chunks of mars bar, caramel and ice cream that accompanied it complemented it well, so you're not stuck with dry pancakes nor a pancakes drowned in sauce! i also have to say i love the presentation of this dish.. there's just something about having 3 chunky pancakes stacked up, i suppose i'm just used to seeing thin pancakes on a plate drowned in sauce of some kind!

There were other food items on the menu i'm also keen to try out as well, namely, Barramundi en Papillote, Broccoli & Parmesan Fritters and the Brioche French Toast. I guess the thing about Campos is, depending on what food you order, will determine whether or not you decide to like Campos Cafe - i mean i do admit, the first time i ordered food, it wasn't mind blowing amazing, but it was good and i was still undecided whether or not i loved it.. i think the food today probably tipped the scale towards a definite like; i suppose it's that idea of having different food items each month which makes Campos just a bit more unique to draw people back to it :)
